How to make a meme

  1. Drop, paste or choose a picture. No picture? Pick 1:1, 4:5 or 16:9 for a plain background.
  2. Type the top and bottom text. Adjust the size, font, colours and outline as you like.
  3. Press PNG or JPG to download. There is no watermark.

The classic meme look

The familiar meme style is heavy white capitals with a thick black outline, placed at the top and bottom of the picture. The outline is what keeps the text readable on any photo, whether the background is sky, snow or a dark room. That’s the default here: white fill, black outline, Impact font and ALL CAPS.

The outline grows with the text size, so large and small text both stay crisp. Long lines wrap automatically, and lines in Korean, Japanese and other text without spaces wrap between characters. Press Enter to force a new line.

Sizes you get

With your own photo, the meme keeps the photo’s shape. If its longer side is above 1,600 px it is scaled down to 1,600 px, which is plenty for chat apps and social posts and keeps the file small.

Without a photo, you get a plain background: 1:1 gives 1,080 × 1,080, 4:5 gives 1,080 × 1,350 for portrait feeds, and 16:9 gives 1,920 × 1,080 for slides and video thumbnails.

PNG or JPG?

PNG keeps the text edges perfectly sharp and suits images with flat colour, such as a meme on a plain background. JPG is usually smaller for photos and is accepted everywhere. If a site rejects your file for being too large, download as JPG or run it through Compress Image. To crop or resize the result for a specific platform, use Bulk Image Resizer.

Use pictures you’re allowed to use

Your own photos and screenshots are safest. Images from films, TV, news or other people’s posts may be protected by copyright or show people who didn’t agree to be in a joke, so think before you share widely, especially for anything commercial. Keep jokes about real people kind.

Privacy

The picture is drawn on a canvas inside your browser and never uploaded. Fonts come from your device: Impact is installed on Windows and macOS; on phones without it, a similar heavy font is used instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a watermark?

No. The downloaded image contains only your picture and your text.

Can I write in Korean, Japanese or other languages?

Yes. Text in any script is supported and wraps correctly. If Impact has no characters for your language, a bold system font for that script is used.

Why does the font look different on my phone?

The tool uses fonts already on your device instead of downloading them. Impact isn’t installed on most Android phones, so a similar bold sans-serif is used.

Can I move the text to the middle?

Not yet. Text sits at the top and bottom, which is the classic layout. Leave one box empty to use only one line.
