How to convert an image
- Drop one or more images, paste one with Ctrl+V, or click Choose files.
- Pick the format under Convert to. For JPG you can choose the background for transparent areas.
- Click Convert and download each file or all of them as a ZIP.
How it works
Your browser opens the image with its own decoder, draws it on a canvas and saves it in the new format. Anything the browser can display can be read: JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, SVG and, in most current browsers, AVIF. The formats you can save to depend on your browser; JPG and PNG always work, WebP works in all current browsers, and AVIF appears only where the browser can encode it.
JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background color you pick, white by default.
What we measured
We converted 9 PNG sample photos from the scikit-image project (6,072 KB in total) in Chrome on a 4-core test computer. As JPG at quality 90 they came to 1,010 KB; as WebP at quality 90, 809 KB. The whole batch took 0.58 seconds per format.
The lesson: for photos, PNG is the wrong container. For screenshots with large flat areas and sharp text, PNG often stays small and looks crisper than JPG.
When to use it
A website or app refuses WebP images saved from the web: convert them to JPG. A logo needs a transparent background: save as PNG or WebP. A blog wants lighter images: convert to WebP. An old program can’t open AVIF: convert to JPG.
To also cut the file size, continue with Compress Image. To collect the converted images in one document, use Image to PDF.
Limits
- HEIC photos from iPhones can be opened only where the browser supports HEIC (currently Safari). Elsewhere, set your iPhone to share as JPG (Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible).
- Animated GIFs and WebPs are saved as a still image of the first frame.
- SVG is converted at its own size; very small SVGs give small images.
- Metadata such as camera model and GPS location is not copied.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded?
No. Conversion uses your browser’s built-in image decoders and encoders; files never leave your device.
Does converting reduce quality?
Saving to JPG, WebP or AVIF is lossy, but at quality 90 the difference is hard to see. PNG is lossless. Converting a JPG to PNG doesn’t restore detail that JPG already removed.
Why don’t I see AVIF?
Your browser can read AVIF but not create it. The button appears automatically in browsers that can.
Can I convert many images at once?
Yes. Drop as many as you like and download them all in one ZIP.
