QR codes

Make a Wi-Fi QR code so guests can connect in one scan

Create a QR code that connects phones to your Wi-Fi in one scan: what goes inside it, which phones support it, and how to share it safely with guests.

Why bother

Reading out a 16-character password letter by letter is slow and error-prone, especially in a café, an office reception or a holiday rental. A Wi-Fi QR code lets guests point their camera at a sign and tap *Join*. Nobody has to type anything, and you can use a long, strong password without regret.

Making one

Open QR Code Generator and choose Wi-Fi. Fill in:

  • Network name (SSID) exactly as it appears in the Wi-Fi list, including capital letters and spaces.
  • Security: WPA/WPA2/WPA3 for almost every modern router; WEP only for very old ones; *No password* for an open network.
  • Password: copy it from the router’s admin page or the sticker on the router to avoid typos.
  • Hidden network: tick only if your network doesn’t broadcast its name.

Download PNG to show on a screen or put in a document, or SVG to print a sign.

What is inside the code

The code holds a short piece of text in a standard format that phone cameras recognise, for example:

WIFI:T:WPA;S:Cafe Guest;P:sunny-day-2026;;

*T* is the security type, *S* the network name and *P* the password. Special characters such as ; : , \ and " in the name or password must be escaped with a backslash, which the tool does for you. That example is 42 characters long and makes a 29 × 29 module code at the default error correction, small enough to print at business-card size.

Which phones can scan it

iPhones read Wi-Fi codes with the built-in Camera app (iOS 11 and later), and most Android phones from Android 10 onwards do too, through the camera or Google Lens. Older Android phones may need a QR scanner app. Laptops generally can’t use them, so keep the password written somewhere for those.

Share it safely

Anyone who can see the code can read the password: a QR code is just text, not encryption.

  • Put the code on a guest network if your router offers one, so visitors can’t reach your computers, printers or smart home devices.
  • Don’t post a photo of the sign online.
  • If you change the password, print a new code; the old one stops working.

Need a new password for the guest network? Password Generator makes a strong one, and with the QR code nobody has to type it. The code is generated in your browser, so your Wi-Fi password isn’t sent to us.
